Diplomatic ties

Hungary established consular relations with Australia in 1967. The Hungarian Consulate-General was opened in Sydney also this year. Hungary established full diplomatic relations on 6 April 1972. The Hungarian Embassy was opened in 1975 in Canberra. The Hungarian Consulate-General in Sydney was closed in 2009 and New South Wales has been covered from Canberra. The Consular Office opened in Melbourne in 2013, and the Trade and Consular Office opened in Sydney in 2018. These are not an independent mission of Hungary, and are supervised by the Embassy of Hungary in Canberra. The Australian Embassy in Budapest was closed on 12 July 2013 and since the Australian Ambassador to Hungary has been accredited from Vienna.
