Hungarian citizens should have all events (birth, marriage, divorce and death) registered that take place abroad. Applications may be lodged at the registrar offices in Hungary or through the Consular Section of the Embassy of Hungary as well as Hungarian honorary consuls based in Australia. Registrations are done and certificates are issued by the Government Office of the Capital City of Budapest. The Consular Section is authorized to collect and forward applications only. Estimated timeframe in case of complete applications: six months.

Certificates issued by Hungary are trilingual (Hungarian, English and French) and typed.

  1. Registration of birth

Hungarian citizens should have the birth of their children registered. The required documents to be submitted with the application are as follows.

  • Completed birth registration application form. Application form should be signed by both parents.
  • Original or certified consular copy of birth certificate (long form aka unabridged form). If you wish to keep the original certificate, the Consular Section of the Embassy is authorised to make a legalised copy. Translation of Australian birth certificate is required only if the certificate is hand written or contains notes in the endorsement box. (‘Not any’ is not regarded as note.)
  • Proof of parents’ Hungarian nationality: valid Hungarian passport, identity card, naturalization document or citizenship certificate
  • Proof of identity.
  • Original or certified consular copy of parents’ marriage certificate. If the parents’ marriage has not yet been registered in Hungary, it has to be undertaken with the registration of the child’s birth. If parents were not married at the time of the applicant’s birth or they enter into a legally binding marriage after the birth of the child, a voluntary acknowledgement of paternity has to be made in person in front of a consular officer. This special declaration form should be completed and signed by both parents. If the applicant is an adult (18 years or over), he/she is also required to sign the form.

 

 

  1. Registration of marriage

Hungarian citizens should have their marriage registered that take place abroad. The required documents to be submitted with the application are as follows.

  • Completed marriage registration application form.
  • Original or certified consular copy of marriage certificate (long form aka unabridged marriage certificate). Translation of Australian certificate is required only if the certificate is hand written or contains notes in the endorsement box. (‘Not any’ is not regarded as note.)
  • Copy of Hungarian certificates of the Hungarian party.
  • Proof of Hungarian nationality: valid Hungarian passport, identity card, naturalization document or citizenship certificate.
  • Proof of nationality of the non-Hungarian party.
  • Proof of identity of both parties.
  • Document proving the status prior to the marriage as a divorced or widowed person (where applicable): the final court decision about the divorce (with Hungarian translation) or death certificate of deceased spouse.
  • Certificate of marital status of the non-Hungarian party prior to the marriage (if he/she divorced or widow(er)). This document should be translated.

 

  1. Registration of divorce

If the marriage was solemnized and terminated abroad and neither the marriage nor the divorce had been registered in Hungary the two applications will need to be submitted at the same time.

The required documents to be submitted with the application are as follows.

  • Completed divorce registration application form.
  • Original Hungarian marriage certificate.
  • Final court order on divorce.
  • Hungarian translation of court order.
  • Copy of Hungarian certificates of the Hungarian national.
  • Proof of Hungarian nationality: valid Hungarian passport, identity card, naturalization document or citizenship certificate.
  • Proof of nationality of the non-Hungarian party.
  • Proof of identity of both parties.

 

 

  1. Registration of death

The required documents to be submitted with the application are as follows.

  • Completed death registration application form.
  • Original or certified consular copy of death certificate.
  • A copy of Hungarian certificates of the deceased. If the birth of the deceased has not been registered in Hungary, it should be registered within the same procedure.
  • Proof of Hungarian nationality: valid Hungarian passport, identity card, naturalization document or citizenship certificate.
  • Document proving the status prior to death as a divorced or widowed person.
